Captain Robert Morrison
St. Louis Fire Department
2002

It has been almost 5 years, and I still remember the night like it was yesterday. My children and I knew about the fire from the news. We knew 2 firemen were injured and were concerned enough to call the firehouse. I received no answer. I knew it wasn't Rob because an hour had passed and someone would have contacted me. My children and I went to bed. As soon as we laid our heads on the pillow, a car pulled up in front of the house. Then came the knock on our front door. When I opened the door, our life changed forever. My uncle who had been a firefighter for 25 years was standing on my steps. All I wanted to know was if Rob was alive! With that answer went 15 years of marriage. I now dream about the last time Rob and I ever talked to each other, at exactly 8:55 p.m. We talked about the plans we had for the next day when he came home from the firehouse. The fun we would have taking our kids to Chucky Cheese. My children can now only dream about the last time they ever talked to their daddy. The last time they said, "I Love You." It was just 10 minutes later he would respond to a fire in a building that would end his life.

As with everything in Rob's life, he approached his job with dedication, passion and commitment. He was never more proud than when he rescued two children from a burning apartment a month before he died. It was with that same unselfish spirit that Rob gave his life on May 3, 2002, attempting to save the life of a fellow firefighter.

We know we will see Rob again some day. That is the peace Jesus gives us to get through each day without him. He is our true hero!!!
