Millburn, New Jersey Firefighters Eating For Life, and For Everyone Going Home

The Everyone Goes Home Program congratulates the Millburn (NJ) Fire Department which has developed a voluntary dietary program designed to promote health hearts and bodies.

The firefighters have entered the second phase of their new health and fitness initiative, which includes hiring of a nutrition expert to teach them healthy eating habits.

Chief Mike Roberts began the program by having fresh fruit delivered to firehouses so his members could snack on health foods. The program now includes training sessions that discuss eating habits and cardiovascular health, recognizing the number one problem facing the fire service and firefighter line of duty deaths-that firefighting and responses place an extraordinary demand on the heart.

Chief Roberts said, in an interview, "We're trying to crawl first," the chief said, adding, "Even if we get somebody on a treadmill that never exercised, just to walk for ten minutes, I think we've kind of won." The Millburn Fire Department's program is a cooperative program between labor and management.

Let's all win. Let's improve our cardiovascular health and help decrease the number one killer on our job. Let's follow the lead of Millburn and others and eat healthy and work out to help ensure that Everyone Goes Home.
